Over the course of the series Harper becomes one of Sharpe's closest friends and his most reliable companion (to the point where the duo privately address each other by their first names), sharing most of his exploits and rising in rank beside him to sergeant and regimental sergeant major.
Harper is the trusted right hand of Richard Sharpe with whom he was initially antagonistic, not quite trusting a man who is uncomfortable being an officer ( Sharpe's Rifles) but Harper eventually becomes Sharpe's best friend and most reliable companion, rising in rank to sergeant and later to regimental sergeant-major.
