Believe it or not, the phrase “cruel to be kind” actually was first used in William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet,” when Hamlet says “I must be cruel, only to be kind.”. We still say a pretty close version of the phrase, “You have to be cruel to be kind,” and the meaning is the same.
