To see the face of God is to to be overwhelmed, consumed, and destroyed by His nature or His being, because it’s simply too much for a human to comprehend. Metaphorically, seeing the face of God could mean seeing/experiencing/learning something that fundamentally changes you, potentially destroys the version of you that existed.
