Den første London Bridge ble bygd i årene 1176–1209 som en steinbro med 19 buespenn og forbandt bydelene City og Southwark. Langs brobanen ble det etter hvert bygd mange hus med butikker og boliger, og i begge ender av broen var det låsbare porter. Husene brant ned ved bybrannen i 1666, men ble gjenoppbygd før de ble endelig fjernet i 1763.
