Martin Kemp joined as bass player when they became Gentry in July 1978 before transforming into Spandau Ballet and playing live for the first time at Blitz on 5 December 1979. The band's early success was driven by London's burgeoning nightclubbing scene in which Gary Kemp identified Spandau's role: "We are making the most contemporary statement in fashion and music."

Spandau Ballet är en brittisk musikgrupp från London som bildades av Gary Kemp, Martin Kemp, John Keeble, Tony Hadley och Steve Norman 1979. De var ett av de ledande banden inom new romantic -genren och utvecklade senare en elegant och välpolerad soulpopstil. Gruppen hade stora framgångar under 1980-talet med låtar som "True" och "Gold".
Following their break up, George Michael encouraged her to telephone Spandau Ballet bassist and singer Martin Kemp, who had given her his number. Holliman and Kemp married in St. Lucia in 1988 and went on to have two children: daughter Harley Moon Kemp (born August 1989), and son Roman Kemp (born January 1993).
Martin Kemp Bass. Martin was born in Islington in October 1961. ... Steve was initially a guitarist in the band along with Gary Kemp. By the third Spandau Ballet album not only did he bring his love of percussion to the mix but also introduced the saxophone which has since become his signature instrument.
