The story comes from the the books of kings in the Bible (1 Books of Kings 3:5-15). In it God appaers in a dream before Solomon and promises Solomon anything he wants.

Hijo de un modesto artista, parece que tuvo su primera educación en el taller de Ribera, con quien, según sus biógrafos, permaneció durante ocho años. Existen noticias de un temprano viaje a Roma, en torno a 1652, donde se sintió especialmente interesado por el arte de la Antigüedad, el Renacimiento y Pietro da Cortona.

This group of ten paintings was made by Giordano as a series of detailed oil studies (or modelli) for the ceiling frescoes in the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence.Begun in 1682 and completed in 1685, the frescoes are among Giordano’s finest achievements and appear to have been painted ‘ a secco ’ – that is, on dry rather than fresh (‘ a fresco ’) plaster.
