Hugo De Vries. Nació en Haarlem el 16 de febrero de 1848 y murió en Lunteren (Güeldres) el 21 de mayo de 1935. Estudió en Leyden, donde se graduó en 1870, y luego marchó a alemania; allí estuvo en Heidelberg y Wurzburgo. En 1878 es nombrado profesor de la Universidad de Amsterdam; en ella permaneció hasta 1918.
