Hugo de Vries. Hugo Marie de Vries (n. 16 februarie 1848 - d. 21 mai 1935) a fost un botanist neerlandez și unul dintre primii geneticieni. I se atribuie introducerea conceptului de genă, redescoperirea legilor eredității ale lui Gregor Mendel și dezvoltarea teoriei mutațiilor genetice .

Hugo de Vries propuso una nueva teoría de la evolución, conocida como mutacionismo, que esencialmente elimina la selección natural como el proceso principal en la evolución. Il invente le terme de mutation en science de l'hérédité dans son sens génétique dans le cadre de sa théorie mutationniste [5] élaborée de 1901 à 1903 [6].
