14 de oct. de 2021 · The Milky Way Galaxy. This image is from observations made by the COBE satellite. COBE was launched by NASA in November, 1989. It was designed to study the radiation believed to be a remnant of the explosion that started the expansion of the Universe. In scientific terms, it measured the diffuse infrared and microwave background radiation.
Milky Way 우리말로 직역하면 은하수로만 알려져 있지만, 우리 은하를 지칭하는 표현으로도 사용된다. 애초에 은하수가 지구에서 우리 은하를 바라본 모습이기 때문에 엄연히 따지면 그게 그거인 셈. 별들로 하얗게 빛나는 은하수가 마치 우유가 흐르는 강과 같다고 붙여진 이름.

That sounds huge, and it is, at least until we start comparing it to other galaxies. Our neighboring Andromeda galaxy, for example, is some 220,000 light-years wide. Another galaxy, IC 1101, spans as much as 4 million light-years.
The thin disk of our home spiral galaxy is clearly apparent, with stars appearing white and interstellar dust appearing red. APOD: 2005 June 5 - A Milky Way Band. Explanation: Most bright stars in our Milky Way Galaxy reside in a disk. Since our Sun also resides in this disk, these stars appear to us as a diffuse band that circles the sky.
