Conditional clauses, also known as if clauses or conditional sentences, express an imagined situation or condition and the possible result of that situation. They consist of a main clause and a conditional dependent clause. Conditional clauses are often introduced by the word if, although sometimes other words can be used.
There are 4 main types of conditional clauses (if-clauses)... Conditionals Summary Chart. As you can see, each type of conditional has its own combination of tense used in the if-clause and tense used the main clause. These different pairings of tenses give each type of conditional its own meaning.
Conditionals. Conditional sentences usually consist of a subordinate if -clause and a main clause. The order of the clauses is optional, but if the if -clause is first, a comma is used to separate the two clauses: You might have been accepted if you had applied earlier.

Third conditionals and mixed conditionals. Conditionals describe the result of a certain condition. The if clause tells you the condition ( If I hadn't been ill) and the main clause tells you the result ( I would have gone to the party ). The order of the clauses does not change the meaning. If I hadn't been ill, I would have gone to the party.
