Western Colorado University. No mention of Gunnison would be complete without talking about Western. Established in 1901, Western Colorado University is a public, liberal arts university with a private-college feel. Western students come to Gunnison from across the U.S. for a personalized, hands-on education in an adventurous mountain setting.
Gunnison is a nice little Colorado town, however, since it is a college town, we were surprised that all the coffee shops, (including Starbucks!) were all closed by 7 pm. We only stayed one night and for convenience sake we just ate a McDonalds. Gunnison is small so navigating the town was easy, especially with GPS.

The population increases annually with the influx of tourism and Western Colorado University students numbering an additional 2,500. The City of Gunnison is the county seat for Gunnison County.
