Sa publication d'un journal des années 1939 à 1948 puis de 1965 à 1996 fait de lui un témoin précieux de l'histoire du 20è siècle. Ernst Jünger a reçu en 1977 l'Aigle d'or au festival au Livre de Nice. En 1982, il reçoit le prix Goethe.
Né en 1895, issu d’une moyenne bourgeoisie aisée et cultivée (son père est pharmacien), Ernst Jünger fugue à 18 ans, part en France et s’engage dans la Légion étrangère. Il rêve d’aventures et veut échapper à l’étouffante atmosphère de la civilisation bourgeoise. Après quelques semaines de "classes" à Sidi Bel Abbes, il est rapatrié à la demande de son père.

The son of a successful businessman and chemist, Jünger rebelled against an affluent upbringing and sought adventure in the Wandervogel, before running away to briefly serve in the French Foreign Legion, an illegal act.
