Robert Bloch, estadounidense con ascendencias alemanas, nació el 5 de abril del año 1917 en la ciudad de Chicago, estado de Illinois. Su familia era de religión judía, siendo su padre el bancario Raphael Bloch y su madre una trabajadora social y maestra de escuela de nombre Stella Loeb. Tenía una hermana menor llamada Genevieve.

Exhausted, lost, and at the end of her rope, she was eager for a hot shower and a bed for the night. Her room was musty but clean and the plumbing worked. Norman Bates, the manager, seemed nice, if a little odd.

Una lectura intensa y absorbente, muy centrada en la psicología del personaje principal, Norman Bates, que por cierto, es descrito con un físico que no tiene nada que ver con el del actor Anthony Perkins que tenemos en mente por la conocida película de Alfred Hitchcock.
