James McKeen Cattell (1860–1944), although primarily a psychologist, probably did more than anyone else of his generation to foster the development in the United States of the sciences, especially the behavioral and biological sciences. He was one of the founders of the American Psychological Association and of several other scientific societies.

Leben. Cattell wuchs als ältestes Kind einer wohlhabenden und prominenten Familie auf. Sein Vater William Cassady Cattell, ein Presbyterianer-Geistlicher, wurde kurz nach James’ Geburt Präsident des Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. Seine Mutter Elizabeth „Lizzie“ McKeen brachte in die Ehe 1859 ein erhebliches Erbe ein.
