In 1824, while on a trapping expedition, Bridger stumbled upon this massive body of water. He initially mistook it for an arm of the Pacific Ocean, a misconception that was later corrected.
Jim Bridger and several other trappers bought out William Ashley in 1830. They formed the Rocky Mountain Fur Company competing with the Hudson’s Bay Company and John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company for the lucrative beaver pelt trade.
