Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Edward Almond graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1915 and became an infantry officer in 1916, serving in France during the final months of World War I. During World War II he was commanding general of 92d Division, then he joined General McArthur's staff and rose to Chief of Staff for the Far Eastern Command.

Almond committed himself fully to any task, and such dedication would guide him through his next challenge: training and commanding black troops. No white officer sought this task, but having received the mission, Almond threw himself into it. Almond assumed command of the 92 nd Infantry Division, an African American unit.

Edward Almond was born on December 12, 1892, in Luray, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1915, and was commissioned a 2d Lt of Infantry in the U.S. Army on December 1, 1916.
