Lyle Mays (November 27, 1953 - February 10, 2020) was an American jazz pianist from Wausaukee, Wisconsin. He is best known for his work with guitarist Pat Metheny as a member of the Pat Metheny Group, in which he collaborated with Metheny in composition and provided arrangements, orchestration and - most remarkably - the complex harmonic and metric backbone of the group's musical signature.
Lyle’s precocious pianistic and compositional skills made me imagine that, in another time, he would have been someone like Rachmaninoff. In our time, he was Lyle Mays! Lyle’s understanding of musical possibilities and the creativity, logic, and expression he brought was on par with the greatest musicians I’ve known.
REFLECTIONS. LYLE: The most sophisticated thing I ever wrote was the third movement of the “Street Dreams” suite. It was scored for a live chamber orchestra and prerecorded synths with an English Horn lead. Steve Rodby conducted the orchestra in the studio and after the first run-through the players put down their instruments and applauded.
