Lightnin' Hopkins chronology; California Mudslide (and Earthquake) (1969) Lightnin'! (1969) In the Key of Lightnin' (2002) CD Reissue Cover; Lightnin'! is an album by the blues musician Lightnin' Hopkins recorded in California in 1969 and released on the Poppy label as a double LP.
Hopkins was a master rhythm guitar player and lyrical improviser. Influenced by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander, Hopkins—rechristened "Lightnin'"—signed with Aladdin Records in the '40s. The prolific singer/guitarist, who recorded for countless labels over the years, scored hits up to the mid-'50s before falling into obscurity.

Lightnin' Hopkins was of the latter variety. With a career that stretched from the 1920s through the '70s, the Texas bluesman was a genre unto himself, a deft guitarist equally at home in a quiet solo performance or fronting an electrified boogie band.
Filmmaker Les Blank captured the Texas troubadour’s informal lifestyle most vividly in his acclaimed 1967 documentary, The Blues Accordin’ to Lightnin’ Hopkins.
