The Police comienza su historia en Londres, en 1976. En la capital británica se unieron tres jóvenes músicos: el guitarrista francés Henry Padovani, Sting (que tocaba el contrabajo en un modesto grupo de jazz) y Stewart Copeland. The Police comienza subiéndose al carro del 'punk', de moda en aquella época, pero tanto Sting como Stewart odiaban la falta de calidad de aquel movimiento.
