Ass Ponys was formed in 1988 by the members of two unsigned Cincinnati bands. Bassist Dave Cheek had played with the Libertines, while vocalist/guitarist Chuck Cleaver and drummer Don Kleingers had played in a band called Gomez. They added another guitarist, John Erhardt, and began practicing at his house.
