Oliver Twist; or the Parish Boy's Progress was written when he was only 25, and first published serially in "Bentley's Miscellany" where Dickens was editor, from February 1837 to April 1839. Interestingly though, it was not originally intended as a novel but as part of a series of sketches called the "Mudfog Papers".

Oliver Twist es la segunda obra de Charles Dickens. Se publicó como novela por entregas de aparición mensual en una revista dirigida por el autor, cuya intención era que formase parte de una obra más extensa. Se trata de una novela inspirada por la picaresca y la novela gótica sobre un niño huérfano que debe buscarse la vida.
Oliver Twist, publicada por entregas en 1837, consolidó la fama de Charles Dickens y es, sin duda, una de sus novelas más conocidas. Con ella se proponía demostrar que se podía «servir a la moral» mediante una historia con «personajes elegidos entre lo más criminal y degradado de la población de Londres», y donde sin embargo sobrevivieran la candidez y la fragilidad.
