Before Winkelmann took over management of Lamborghini in 2005, he worked in various positions at Fiat, including as CEO of Fiat Auto in Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

Après son baccalauréat à l'école allemande de Rome, il a étudié les sciences politiques dans la ville éternelle et à Munich. Avant de prendre la direction de Lamborghini en 2005, M. Winkelmann a exercé diverses fonctions chez Fiat et a été, entre autres, président du directoire de Fiat Auto Autriche, Suisse et Allemagne.
