François Chau se narodil 26.10.1959 v hlavním kambodžském městě Phnom Penh. Jako šestiletý se s celou rodinou, která je čínsko-vietnamského původu, přestěhoval do Saigonu ve Vietnamu. Jejich pouť po roce ale pokračovala, kvůli právě vznikajícímu vietnamskému válečnému konfliktu rodina zamířila do Francie.
