Jonathan Pryce nació el 1 de junio de 1947 en Holywell, Flintshire, Gales, Reino Unido. Estudió en la escuela de arte dramático RADA. Después de graduarse se unió a la Compañía de Teatro Liverpool Everyman, continuando con una temporada interpretando en el Nottingham Playhouse bajo la dirección de Richard Eye, regresando mas tarde como director artistico al Everyman.
