Hansberry was an anti-war activist, a civil rights activist, and a women’s rights activist. She was always ready for a protest or a political fight. At the same time, she continued to write. Hansberry wrote her most famous work, A Raisin in the Sun, in 1957. She was 29 when she wrote the play.

Englewood High School, which she attended and which was about a mile and a half away from her home, changed its name to Englewood Technical Prep Academy and then closed in 2008. The campus is now home to two charter schools: Urban Prep Academy and TEAM Englewood.
Although Lorraine Hansberry had married, she identified as a lesbian. She wrote and published A Raisin in the Sun in 1959. Their divorce wasn't finalized until years later, but they remained business partners and maintained a close relationship until her death. Lorraine Hansberry died on January 12, 1965.
