Maurice was best known for overseeing the Gainsborough melodramas. and was head of production at Gainsborough Studios from 1943–46. Nigel's uncle Isidore Ostrer, created and ran Gaumont British, the largest UK movie company in the 1930s, employing 16,000 people.
