Pit Pony. Transcript based on an interview with former mineworker (Mr Singleton) recorded in the 1970’s by Roy Dyson, a teacher from Hall Park Technical Grammar School, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire. In the days before mechanisation, pit ponies were stabled underground and were used to transport materials in and coal out of the mine.
13 de feb. de 2020 · Pit ponies were first used down the mines in Britain as long ago as 1750. At one time, around 70,000 of the miniature horses worked underground, even living in stables in the pits and seeing daylight only once a year. The practice of using pit ponies finally ended in the last decade of the 20th century, after 250 years.
By the early 1970s, the era of pit ponies in coal mines was drawing to a close. On December 3, 1972, the poignant and symbolic end of this era arrived with the emergence of Ruby, the last miner’s horse. In a grand farewell ceremony, Ruby was brought out of the mines, accompanied by an orchestra and adorned with a flower wreath.
