Ulmer was born in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on February 2, 1942. Gospel and the blues—spiritual hymns and worldly tales—were formative influences during Ulmer’s youth. At the age of seven, he joined his father’s gospel quartet, the Southern Sons, where he learned to play guitar and sing baritone.
