American Music is an amalgam of Dave Alvin originals and standards from the period and genres The Blasters are trying to emulate. Of their own stuff, the best are the mission statement title track, "She Ain't Got The Beat", "Flattop Joint", "She's Gone Away" and – for all you closet Shakin' Stevens fans out there – the original of one of his better songs, "Marie, Marie".
