Add all dry ingredients, ground beef, and any preferred seasonings to the boiling water. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until lentils and split peas are soft. Leftovers can be frozen.

Remove tricolor pasta from top of jar and reserve. Add the rest of the jar contents to the kettle with 12 cups water. Let come to a boil and simmer 45 minutes. Add tricolor pasta and simmer 15 minutes more.
Soak 1/3 cup of split peas and 1/2 cup of lentils overnight. In a 5 quart kettle, brown 1 lb. chopped meat and drain. Add remaining ingredients, plus the split peas and lentils (except the pasta) plus 12 cups of water. Heat to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to a simmer for 30 minutes.
