Starting the war in the old battleship Dominion, Forbes-Sempill was appointed executive officer of the battleship Valiant on 6 September 1915 and fought in her at the Battle of Jutland. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1916. Forbes-Sempill was appointed command of the scout cruiser Blonde in February 1917.
