Elaine Mayes has been an active visual artist since 1960. A main focus and emphasis for her work has been investigations of ‘seeing’ and documentary forms in photography. This interest led to a number of projects and seeking out various close at hand situations in the world as subject material for her photographs.
Elaine Mayes studied photography and painting at the California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco Art Institute) with John Collier, Jr., Minor White, Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliviera. She taught at the University of Minnesota, Hampshire College, Bard College, Pratt Institute, The Cooper Union and The International Center of Photography before beginning at NYU in 1983.

Elaine Mayes | American, 1936 - Elaine Mayes’ photographs bridge multiple forms of documentary image making, both the poetic and conceptual aspects of the medium are expressed in her many projects that range from portraits of 1960’s youth in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco to her photographs framed by her moving car window in Autolandscapes.
Elaine Mayes (b. 1936) is a photographer who taught at Hampshire College from 1971 to 1981. Mayes originally trained as a painter, then began studying photography at San Francisco Art Institute (then called The California School of Fine Arts), where the first fine art photography department had been founded by Ansel Adams in 1945.
