Thing-Fish es un álbum conceptual del músico y compositor estadounidense Frank Zappa, concebido como un musical de Broadway que nunca llegó a estrenarse. Entre los temas que se abordan en el álbum están la dominación blanca en el teatro de Broadway, el SIDA, la eugenesia, las teorías conspirativas, el feminismo, la homosexualidad y la cultura afroamericana.
Good: 1) Ike Willis's Thing-Fish character, spoken with an amusing, knowingly racist dialect similar to Amos and Andy (it helps that Willis is African-American himself). Willis is on top of the role and performs it brilliantly. 2) Terry and Dale Bozzio pulling off a very convincing, albeit over-the-top yuppie couple.
It's offputting. Most of the original tracks are pretty weak as well, with only The Mammy Nuns and Brown Moses having much staying power. It does a lot to contribute to my feeling that Zappa was just losing interest in the rock side of his music in the 80s. Overall: probably Zappa's biggest misstep.
Thing-Fish, an Album by Zappa. Released in November 1984 on Barking Pumpkin (catalog no. SCKO 74201; Vinyl LP). ... I have no idea if Frank thought that injecting random Thing-Fish comments into perfectly fine songs actually made them sound better, or if it's all about advancing the story..
2-sided 11"x11" single sheet promo for "Old Masters Box One" issue. Full-color front, black & white half-tone on reverse, with '24 0294 3' printed bottom-left. This album was preceeded by the Thing-Fish project coming to visual fruition via a 'Hustler' magazine pictorial spread, April 1984, financed by Larry Flynt.
