Lo hizo en el GP de Mónaco, donde bajo una intensa lluvia y saliendo el 13º en parrilla fue escalando posiciones hasta colocarse segundo. Ayrton estaba desatado y se lanzaba a por Alain Prost que era el líder hasta que, por fortuna para Prost, la carrera se dio por finalizada antes de tiempo.
