Proving it is a different matter, however, not least because there are far too many Scots who cling to the Union and the United Kingdom as their country, their nation.

It was formed by the coming together, over centuries, of territories which retained their own national identities and institutions. Key questions of demos (the people), telos (the purpose of union), ethos (binding values) and the locus of sovereignty were never definitively resolved.
The new flag of the United Kingdom was officially created by an Order in Council of 1801, with its blazon reading as follows: The Union Flag shall be azure , the Crosses saltire of Saint Andrew and Saint Patrick quarterly per saltire, counter-changed, argent and gules , the latter fimbriated of the second , surmounted by the Cross of Saint George of the third fimbriated as the saltire.
