Over the period of almost 1900 years since it was created in the 2nd century AD, th is building has changed its role and function many times, as have so many other ancient sites and monuments in Rome. It began its existence as a n imperial mausoleum, and was then incorporated into the defensive perimeter of the city walls.
The castle was decommissioned in 1901 and is now a museum. Castel Sant’Angelo today.
