18 de ago. de 2011 · The International Dota 2 Championships was a double-elimination offline tournament organized by Valve and took place during the five day trade show GamesCom in Cologne, 2011. The venue was used by Valve to unveil Dota 2 to the worldwide audience and offered a staggering $1.6 million prize pool to 16 invited DotA teams from around the world.

The International Dota 2 Championships was held in Seattle, Washington. This tournament was the fourth edition of The International, and it was the third consecutive year that the tournament had been hosted in Seattle.Unlike the previous two years, the tournament was held at the KeyArena, a multi-purpose arena in Seattle Center with a total seating capacity of over 17,000.
As of 2023, 91 different teams have appeared in the group stages of The International. The first International was exclusively invitational; in 2012, Valve implemented the qualifying phase. In following years the number of qualification spots increased, and the number of invitations decreased. Since 2018 there have been no direct invites.
The International is an annual double-elimination LAN tournament hosted by Valve. 16 invited professional DotA teams fight for the title of best Dota 2 team. Winners of The International are awarded large sums of money raised by the community, as well as the Aegis of Champions. As of 2015, The International now takes the place of the summer event in the Dota Major Championships.
