5 de oct. de 2020 · Management of highly migratory species, like Pacific swordfish, is complicated because the species migrate thousands of miles across international boundaries and are fished by many nations. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife collaborates with NOAA Fisheries and the Pacific Fishery Management Council to manage the North Pacific swordfish fishery on the West Coast.
This may be due to a number of factors, including a higher quality product and public demand for swordfish from fisheries using gear that results in less bycatch. In 2017 21 vessels landed nearly 53,000 pounds of swordfish in California, worth $266,000 in ex-vessel revenue ( Table 16, Table 17, HMS SAFE Report 2017 ).
Swordfish tolerate temperatures of about 5° to 27°C, but their preferred range is about 18° to 22°C, while larvae have been found only at temperatures exceeding 24°C. Swordfish grow in length very rapidly, with both males and the faster-growing females reaching lower-jaw-fork lengths of more than a meter during their first year.
