『Carol of the Bells』のメロディは、ウクライナに古くから伝わる新年の歌がモチーフとなっているという。 国立キエフ大学（ウクライナ）の生徒らによって1916年に初演され、その後ウクライナの国立合唱団が西欧・アメリカなどに歌い広めていった。
「キャロル・オブ・ザ・ベル」（原題： Carol of the Bells ）はウクライナの民謡を元に、マイコラ・レオントーヴィッチュが1914年に編曲した シュチェドルィック （英語版、ウクライナ語版） に、1936年にウクライナ人作曲家ピーター・J・ウィルウフスキーが英語の歌詞を付けたもの。
