Die Stadt geht auf das ehemalige, britische Fort Jameson zurück, benannt nach dem Abenteurer und Politiker Leander Jameson.Die Bezeichnung als Fort ergibt sich aus der damaligen befestigten Lage der Verwaltungseinrichtungen in Form einer Boma.
