Ses débuts en 1952 à l’Eastern Trophy de Goodwood lui ouvrant les portes du monde des compétitions, le jeune homme ne conquit pas son titre de champion par hasard.
Mike Hawthorn werd in 1958 op een bijzondere manier wereldkampioen. Tijdens een race in Oporto , Portugal , werd hij eerst gediskwalificeerd, omdat hij tegen de rijrichting in gereden zou hebben.
