Labour of Lust featured Lowe's one big American hit, "Cruel to Be Kind," which was a reworked version of an old Brinsley Schwarz song. Between the recording and touring in 1979, Lowe married Carlene Carter, the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash; he would produce her albums Musical Shapes (1980) and Blue Nun (1981).

Gregg Geller, an A&R man at Lowe’s American label Columbia, picked the tune out after listening to a large number of demos and potential songs, and heard a hit.
