About Arnold Lobel. During his distinguished career Arnold Lobel wrote and/or illustrated over 70 books for children. To his illustrating credit, he had a Caldecott Medal book – Fables (1981) – and two Caldecott Honor Books-his own Frog and Toad are Friends (1971) and Hildilid’s Night by Cheli Duran Ryan (1972).

Arnold Lobel est né à Los Angeles en 1933, mais a passé toute son enfance à Schenectady, dans l'état de New York. Diplômé du Pratt Institute de New York, il a commencé à illustrer des livres pour enfants à la fin des années 50, pour l'éditeur new-yorkais Harper and Row.
Arnold Lobel (1933–1987) was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Schenectady, New York. He was ill and homebound during most of second grade, and one of the ways he kept busy was by drawing animals. When he finally returned to school, he used his drawings as a way to make friends with his classmates.
