Antoine Meillet (1866–1936) was the most important linguist of the first half of the twentieth century in France, while his students would dominate the second half. He was born in his mother’s family home in Moulins in central France, and grew up in the still smaller town of Châteaumeillant, about 100 kilometres to the west, where his father was appointed notary.
