Gustave Courbet was a controversial French painter, who bridged the gap between Romanticism and the Impressionist school of painters. He was controversial not only because he addressed social issues with his work, such as peasants and the working condition of the poor, and the rural bourgeoisie, but also because of the unsentimental way in which he portrayed them.

Gustave Courbet (Ornans (), 10 juni 1819 – La Tour-de-Peilz (Zwitserland), 31 december 1877) was een Frans realistisch schilder en een voorloper van het impressionisme.. Situering. Zijn ouders waren welgestelde landeigenaren uit de streek van Besançon.Na Gustave kregen ze nog vier dochters. Drie van hen (één stierf vroegtijdig) werden later vaak door Courbet geportretteerd.
Para Courbet, el arte debía derivar de la observación objetiva del natural, y propugnaba un realismo anticlásico, antirromántico, antiacadémico, progresista y social. A mediados de la década de los cincuenta, Courbet se dedicó en menor medida a los temas sociales y comenzó una etapa en la que se centró en representar paisajes y escenas de caza, junto a buen número de retratos y desnudos.
