From 1899 to 1902, Woodworth was an instructor in physiology at Columbia and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. For the 1902-1903 academic year, he worked in Charles Sherrington's laboratory at the University of Liverpool. Woodworth. turned to Columbia in 1903 for his first appointment to the department of psychology.

Through his work with Cattell, Woodworth developed skills in measuring individual differences and qualitative experimental methods that greatly influenced the rigorous development of the WPDS.
