In 1973 ontmoette hij Mick Harvey, Phil Calvert, John Cochivera, Brett Purcell, en Chris Coyne op de middelbare school in Caulfield nabij Melbourne.Ze richtten een punkband op met Cave als zanger en spelen punk covers van onder meer Lou Reed, David Bowie en Alice Cooper.
