Tom Constanten, composer and second keyboardist for the Grateful Dead, was born on March 19, 1944 in Long Branch, NJ. In the fall of 1961, he met future Dead bassist Phil Lesh while studying astronomy at U.C. Berkeley in California. The two hit it off famously. Soon they were rooming together, cranking out avant-garde compositions.

The only two to avoid the curse are Bruce Hornsby, a temporary fill in following the passing of Brent Mydland, and Tom Constanten, an early player who left the band in 1970. October 2001. Tom Constanten began his career as a classical musician in 1961. He shared an apartment, and worked with Phil Lesh (the bassist), and met Jerry Garcia (guitar) and Robert Hunter (lyricist), before they formed the Grateful Dead. TC (as he likes to be known) joined the band in 1968 after a short spell in the US Air Force.
