Mládí Lou Reed během studií, 1959. Lewis Allan Reed se narodil dne 2. března 1942 v nemocnici Beth El v newyorském obvodu Brooklyn. Byl prvorozeným synem ženy v domácnosti Toby a účetního Sidneyho Reeda. Pět let po narození Lewise se jim narodila dcera Elizabeth.
