Biografia. Robert Ashley ha avuto una formazione universitaria presso l'università del Michigan dove ha lavorato nell'ambito della ricerca psicoacustica.Ha studiato inoltre acustica come ricercatore presso Architectural Research Laboratory nella medesima università. Ashley è stato uno dei fondatori del ONCE festival (1960-1967), ed è stato direttore del San Francisco Tape Music Center.
